1. Фразовый глагол CARRY ON в значении “продолжать” может соотноситься с ‘(not) do something any longer’, ‘keep (on)’, ‘go on’.
Jack does not want to work for his uncle any longer.
CARRY
John does not want TO CARRY ON WORKING for his uncle.
2. LOOK AT может иметь значение ‘examine, investigate, analyse’. Синоним — ‘look into.
«All your complaints will be investigated by my staff tomorrow,» said the bank manager.
LOOK
The bank manager promised that his staff WOULD LOOK AT/ INTO all our complaints the next day.
3. ‘Prevent’ может использоваться с ‘from’ и без него.
I wasn’t able to get to the airport on time because of the bad weather.
PREVENTED
The bad weather PREVENTED ME (FROM) MY GETTING to the airport on time.
4. RATHER THAN может заменяться на INSTEAD OF.
We got to work late because we decided to drive rather than take the train.
INSTEAD
We got to work late because we decided to drive INSTEAD OF TAKING the train.
5. Выражения be about to do sth/ be on the point of doing sth часто заменяют друга. Их значение — “вот-вот что-то произойдет”.
Mr Brown was just about to leave home when he remembered he hadn’t bought a ticket.
POINT
Mr Brown was ON THE POINT OF LEAVING home when he remembered he hadn’t bought a ticket.
6. Слово thought (в значении ‘consideration’) — неисчисляемое в идиоме ‘give some thought/ no thought to sth’. “Подумать, рассматривать”.
Может быть в трансформациях.
I promised that I would think carefully about the job offer.
GIVE
I promised TO GIVE (CAREFUL) THOUGHT /CONSIDERATION TO the job offer
7. Глагол «mean» часто используется в отрицательной форме в значении «plan, want, intend».
Sigmund accidentally left the door unlocked over the weekend.
MEAN
Sigmund DIDN’T MEAN TO LEAVE the door unlocked over the weekend.
8. ‘Postpone’ и ‘put off’ (отложить, перенести) идут как синонимы.
They’ve postponed the match and it will be played next week.
PUT
The match HAS BEEN PUT OFF until next week.
9. ‘It’s not worth doing something’ (не стоит, нет смысла, бесполезно) трансформируется в ‘There’s no point (in) doing something’ или в ‘It’s no good doing something’.
It was not worth going to the market because it was closing.
POINT
The market was closing, so THERE WAS NO POINT IN going there.
10. ‘Prefer doing something / to do something’ работает в паре с ‘would rather do something’, ‘cancel’ — ‘call off’.
I’d prefer not to cancel the meeting.
CALL
I’d rather NOT CALL OFF the meeting.
