Официальные письма в Cambridge CAE Advanced /CAE сильно отличаются по цели и адресату. В отличие от неофициального письма, где можно выделить примерно две группы, в официальном задания из Cambridge 1-4 и Cambridge Trainers 1-2 получилось распределить на четыре категории. Ниже — эти задания, а примеры я буду показывать в отдельных постах.
Письмо в редактору газеты или журнала
Адресат уже понятен по заголовку, а цель такого текста — убедить в свое правоте и перетянуть читающего на свою сторону, редактора.
— You see a poster at the train station announcing the arrival of a large circus in your town. You are opposed to wild animals being kept in captivity, especially being confined and contrarily transported, you decide to state your objections and lobby your local council to have the vent cancelled.
— In your local newspaper, you have just read an article heavily criticising students’ behaviour in the town, outside of school hours. Write a letter to the editor and include the following information:
- your overall reaction to the article
- specific points that you agree or disagree with, and why
- a suggestion for a follow-up article.
— You have read a magazine article which argues that big national celebrations are a water of time and money. Write a letter to the magazine in which you describe a national celebration in your country. You should explain how this celebration is not only enjoyable for citizens but also has a useful social purpose.
— An international lifestyle magazine had published an article which argues that pop music contributes nothing to people’s lives. You have read the article and think that its ideas are too negative. Write a letter to the magazine editor in which you explain your reasons for disagreeing with the article, giving your opinion on the value of pop music in peoples’ lives today.
— You recently helped to organise an arts day in your area, promoting local musician and artists through performances, workshops and exhibitions. You read the article below in a local paper:
Local arts day — a disappointment
Last week’s arts day didn’t attract many people, had limited appeal to young people and was a wastes of conceal money.
You disagree with the negative opinions expressed by the reporter, and decide to write a letter to the Editor, explaining why you disagree and saying what your feel was achieved on the day.
— You read this extract from an article in an English-language newspaper:
It is becoming more and more unusual these days to see children playing outside on bikes or kicking a football around. The popularity of the Internet and computer games is having a negative effect on children’s health, fitness and social skills.
You decide to write a letter to the Editor of the newspaper explaining your views on the points raised in the article and giving reasons for your opinions.
Письмо для приема на работу
Адресат — будущий начальник или рекрутер, а смысл текста — доказать, что вы подходите для заявленной вакансии.
— You see this advertisement in a local newspaper.
Here at Blackmore Books we have a vacancy for a part-time sales assistant. If you love books and would like to join our small team, please send a letter of application to the manager, Eileen James. The idea candidate will be organised, reliable and available to work flexible hours.
— You local tourist office is planning to produce a tourist guidebook. It will give the contract for writing the guidebook to someone who is familiar with the local area. You are interested. Write to the tourist office, saying why you would be suitable for the job. Outline your familiarity with the area, including your knowledge of:
- places of historical interest
- areas of natural beauty
- theme parks and amusement parks.
— You are a university student and you want to spend a month doing work experience at an international company. You decide to write a letter to the Recruitment Manager at the company expelling why you want to do work experience there assaying how the company would also benefit.
Письмо из офиса
Адресат — коллега, начальник или нужный для компании контакт. Цели тут разные — поблагодарить, проинформировать, посоветовать или убедить.
— The vice president of a local IT firm agreed to show you around the company office. She introduced you to three of the managers, who each explained to you what their department does. The following day you decide to write a letter to the vice president to thank her.
— The firm that you work for would like you to use an external IT company to maintain equipment and train employees. Write an email to an IT company the has been recommended to you. Your letter should explain what your firm does, what kind of maintenance work you require, and why your training needs are urgent.
— Your company would like to offer work-experience placements to students in an international college. Write a letter for publication/ application in the student newspaper at the college. Your letter should explain what your company does, what kind off work-experience placements are available, and how students would benefit from the experience.
— You work for an International company. Someone from the Australian branch of your company is coming to work in your branch for three months. Write a letter to your Australian colleague, explaining what you think is distinctive about your branch and the people who work there. You should also give some advice about how the visitor can make the most of their free time while they are in your country.

Это простое письмо-жалоба, смысл которого обосновать свою претензию и потребовать компенсацию за свои неудобства.
— There has been a fire in your home. No one was hurt, but there was a lot of damage. Write to your insurance company describing what happened. The reason for the fire, and asking about payment of your temporary accommodation.
— You recently returned from a holiday abroad. On the flight out, the aircraft was delayed and you missed your onward connection. Your luggage was taken to the wrong destination and not returned to you for two days. Write a letter to the airline describing how your holiday was affected. Say how you feel about their service, and ask for compensation.
— You are a student at an international college. You have decided to write to the college principal to suggest that the college should start a bus service for the college. In your letter, you should describe the problems of travelling to and from college, explain the reasons for your suggestion, and assess the benefits for the college and the local areas.
